Franchise sector regains momentum after the crisis

Franchising in France is proving its resilience in the face of economic challenges. Following a 5% decline in 2010, the sector's sales have grown by 7.7% in 2021 compared with 2020, and by 1.2% compared with 2019, reaching 68.8 billion euros. The French Franchise Federation (FFF) points out that the current weight of franchising is greater than before the crisis.

Expanding sales outlets and franchise networks

In 2021, there will be 79,134 franchised outlets, up 1.4% on 2020 and 1.2% on 2019. The 1,965 partner networks listed generate 795,441 direct and indirect jobs, up 15.4% on 2020 and 2% on 2019.

Growth indicators for franchised outlets and overall sales testify to the strength of the company's strengths, such as support, autonomy and risk control.

Key franchising sectors in France

According to the FFF, food and household goods sales are up 0.3% and 14.2% respectively on 2019. However, personal goods, the 5th largest franchise sector, posted an 8% decline over the same period, with sales of 5.4 billion euros.

Fashion remains the most fragmented sector, with 360 franchised brands, despite a 5% decrease on 2019. Food, with 219 chains (+9% on 2019), and fast food, with 210 chains (-8%), follow. In terms of store numbers, food dominates with 15,162 outlets (-2.1% on 2019), while personal goods come in second with 9,197 stores (-5.7% on 2019).

Franchise Expo Paris 2023 recently closed its doors, with very positive results. With 30,454 participants, attendance was up 25% on the previous edition in 2022. The redesigned and modernized format of the show helped to reinforce the appeal of the franchise model in the business world. With 90 business sectors represented and a strong international presence, Franchise Expo Paris 2023 confirmed the dynamism and vitality of the franchising sector.
