The decree abolishing floating sales has just been published in the Journal Officiel. Introduced by the 2008 law on the modernization of the economy, this system was regularly criticized by retailers.

The decree abolishing floating sales appeared in the Journal Officiel (JO) on Sunday, May 10, to come into force on Monday, May 11. "The decree brings the Commercial Code into line with the provisions of the law of June 18, 2014 relating to crafts, trade and very small businesses, by repealing the provisions relating to floating sales," states the text.

Sales, the only time of year when retailers are allowed to sell at a loss, are held twice a year over fixed five-week periods. Since the 2008 Law on the Modernization of the Economy (LME), retailers have had two additional weeks of sales, known as "floating sales", the dates of which they set themselves.

These two weeks of promotions were regularly called into question and their abolition discussed, as they were accused of being a source of confusion and illegibility for consumers. As for small convenience stores, they felt that they entailed heavy logistical preparation for little economic gain.
