Banque Populaire's annual franchise survey, in partnership with the French Franchise Federation (FFF) and with the participation of the CSA Institute and L'Express, is the benchmark study on the world of franchising. This nationwide survey sheds light on the profile of franchisors, their strategies, their strengths and their concerns for the future.
For its 14th edition, the survey changes format and unveils its first results.

Monthly themed meetings, deciphered and illustrated

The results of the Banque Populaire / FFF annual franchise survey will now be unveiled every month, until summer 2018, through a specific theme, an illustrative infographic, and a summary report. The aim of these monthly appointments is to present each topic in a simple, modern way, to optimize understanding and memorization of the survey's key points.

Part 1: A portrait of franchisees and franchisors in 2017

According to the Banque Populaire / FFF 2017 annual franchise survey, the average franchisee age, 47, has remained stable since 2015. The breakdown of franchisees by age bracket also remains highly stable, with almost one franchisee in two aged between 35 and 49. The representation of women is on the rise, with 43% female franchisees in 2017. The average length of time franchisees have belonged to their network is 12 years, up one year on 2016 and 2015.
The average net annual income of franchisees in 2017 was 33,900 euros, up 5% on 2016 (32,385 euros) and 2015. 42% of franchisees surveyed in 2017 noted an increase in sales (44% in 2016), while median sales stood at 470,000 euros in 2016 versus 420,000 euros in 2017.
Lastly, they employed an average of 6.2 full-time equivalent employees in 2017, compared with 7.3 in 2016.

As for franchisors, the networks they own have an average of 80 outlets, of which 55 are franchises. This figure is relatively stable compared with the two previous years. The median cumulative sales of franchisees is 5 million euros. Finally, 54% of franchisors operate in the service sector and 46% in the retail sector.
