Specialized retail activity grew by 2.4% in November," says Procos. Almost all distribution channels are benefiting from the upturn, but not all sectors of activity.

Specialized retail benefited from an upturn in consumer spending last month, with overall activity up 2.4% on November 2012, on a like-for-like basis. "November 2013 had one fewer working day (24 in total) than November 2012, but one more Saturday (5 in 2013 vs. 4 in 2012)," says the Procos Federation. The rebound observed does not mean that the French have regained their appetite to consume."

Out-of-town retailers enjoyed the strongest increases, ahead of stores in city-centre shopping centers. Only on-street stores in city centers ended November slightly down (-0.1%). Disparities are more marked between business sectors. While specialists in personal goods, sports and automotive equipment performed well, home furnishings and restaurant chains "continued to lag behind", as did the hygiene-beauty-health sector.

Over the first eleven months of the year, specialist retail activity remains negative, at -0.7%."
